Washington (May 13, 2022) — As a university partner of the U.S. Department of State’s Foreign Affairs Information Technology (FAIT) Fellowship, American University College of Arts and Science (AU-CAS) will provide merit-based scholarships to FAIT Fellows enrolling in its eligible master’s programs. The AU-CAS scholarship will cover the difference between FAIT Fellowship tuition assistance and the cost of AU tuition.

“Foreign affairs and tech are two sectors that can benefit greatly from increased diversity,” says Max Paul Friedman, Interim Dean and Professor of History and International Relations, AU-CAS. “This fellowship brings them together in a promising way that reflects American University’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Truly, the field that represents this country to the world, and the field that creates the modern world we all navigate, should look like America.”

The U.S. Department of State launched the FAIT Fellowship program with the goal of attracting the best tech talent to the Foreign Service that reflects the diversity of the United States. Funded by the State Department and administered by The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars (TWC), the FAIT Fellowship encourages members of minority groups underrepresented in the Foreign Service, women, and those with financial need to apply.

This unique two-year Fellowship program provides a path to an exciting career in the U.S. Foreign Service through academic funding, internships, professional development, and ultimately, an appointment as a Foreign Service Information Management Specialist. Fellows receive up to $37,500 annually in academic funding for the junior and senior years of undergraduate study or a two-year master’s program. Fellows also receive stipends, travel expenses and housing for two summer internship experiences – one in Washington, D.C. and one at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate abroad.

“The FAIT Fellowship program opens opportunities for individuals who may otherwise not be able to pursue their IT-related degree and prepares them for an exciting career in public service. This AU scholarship makes pursuing a master’s degree at American University even more accessible to FAIT Fellows in the graduate fellowship,” says Kelly Eaton, TWC’s Chief Academic Officer and Senior Vice President.
